Vacation is over and I'm back home. During my last week of vacation in Europe, I was running with my hubby and fell as if I was sliding into home plate. The road wasn't level and Eddie said to watch out because you don't want to fall and skid your knees. Well, shortly after that, I fell and tripped over a bump on the gravel road. I fell pretty hard and my stomach, left thigh, both elbows got scraped, but both of my knees got the worst of it. It hurt pretty bad and as I got up I saw blood flowing down my legs. As I got up, I started to see spots. I felt like passing out seeing my own blood (I'm a weenie when it come to blood) and starting freaking out. I told Eddie, "I can't see, am I going blind?" And then I starting thinking, "are my knee caps busted, is my running over with?" Eddie the fireman came out and said, "You are going into shock and body thinks you are dying and you are hyperventilating, so calm down and take deep breaths." Somehow he managed to take me to a pharmacy and I sat on edge of curve while he went inside to get help. People were really nice and kept coming up to me gasping and asking if I was okay. I was still seeing spots and just told them that I was hot and thirsty and they quickly brought me water. I never passed out and happy that I could walk cause I knew my knee caps were okay. Some man was kind enough to give us a ride back to our room. I then realized, I was in good hands and lucky my husband is a fireman because he patched me up and took care of me. Eddie said to forget about running the rest of our vacation, so hiking was all I could do. That was a workout in itself, so I didn't feel like I would get behind on my training.
Today I ran my first long distance run of 12 miles since my fall over two weeks ago. I did some short distance runs during the week and it was painful. I couldn't go faster than 10 minute per mile pace due to my right knee being tender from fall. Most of my scabbing is coming off, but I will have some scars on both of my knees. Oh well, as long as I can still run is all that matters to me. So, as of today, I'm back on my New York marathon schedule. I just listened to my body and ran what I could. I had dinner with some friends yesterday and drank some wine and at first I was worried about how I would do today on my run. However, since I knew I wasn't able to run my normal pace due to my knee injury I didn't worry about it (I normally never drink alcohol the night before my long distance run). I ran at Eddie's pace for the first 6 miles because he forgot his GPS device and we were using my Garmin watch to track our miles. After 6 miles I took the lead because he said he had to slow down because het was getting too hot and for me to go on. I was then able to pick up my pace, but I still had to take it easy because my knee still felt a little tender. However, it didn't hurt as bad as during my runs during the week. The temperature outside was cool in the 70's and that also helped me. I was able to finish at a 8:52 pace per mile and happy with that. I did improve and feel I'm starting to recover from my injury. Yes, sometimes you fall, but you must get back up!
