Morning of race:
I woke up and realized we were out of peanut butter and almond butter! No time to go to store, so I just ate a whole banana and ate a Stinger Organic Salted Carmael Flavored Waffle I picked up at the Expo. I don't like changing my routine, but I had to eat something. I hate that I didn't check sooner about the PB, but we had gone to a birthday dinner last night and it just slipped my mind.
Ready or not here we go!
During race:
The weather was perfect running weather. I get there and run into Hilda first thing. It was nice to see her and we decided to start off together. The gun goes off and we take off. I try to turn on my bluetooth earbuds and it doesn't work. I stop before crossing the start line to see if I can get it to work. The volunteer guy tells me I'm holding up people and I move to the side. I tell Hilda to just take off. I can't figure it out and end up being the last one to cross the start line. I'm frustrated trying to figure out why it's not working and it says there is no WIFI connection. I continue to mess with it off and on while running and give up at mile 8 and just put on my music to hear it from speaker off my phone.
My legs felt like they were on fire!
I filled up my two water bottles with coconut water and I didn't close one of them all the way and it spilled all over my shorts. I didn't realize this until after the 10K. Needless to say, it caused me to chafe. So at every medical stop I would get Vaseline to rub my leg.
Crazy hill at mile 9
At around mile 16 my stomach starts to hurt and it feels quizzy. I think to myself it's that waffle I ate. So, I had to find a porta potty to crap that out! I felt a lot better after that. We then get to the point where the marathon and ultra marathoners split up. At this point it's mile 23 and it's so lonely and hardly any spectators at all. I begin to wonder if I'm going to the wrong way, but see arrows on the sidewalk directing us. I see Eddie and Noah at mile 27 and so happy to see them by the water stop at mile 0 on Trinity Trail. I give them a big kiss, drink some water and take off.
My legs want to quit!
I start to run the part of the Trinity Trails I have never ran before and wish I had my taser or pepper spray with me. I then see some ultra runners running towards me and glad to see them. We tell each other good job as we pass each other. I start to wonder where the heck is the turn around for my legs are really starting to hurt. Well, everything starts to hurt. My right hamstring and toes want to cramp up and knees are getting sore. It's a mental game and my mind starts playing tricks on me. I tell myself your pace is all out of wack so just walk/run it the rest of the way. But the competive side of me says no just finish it slow and steady. I was scared of stopping anyway cause I might just really cramp up. I keep asking the volunteers where is the turn around and does it end at Will Rogers or sooner. They just keep saying you are going great just a few more miles.
The Finish Line:
The turn around is at mile 28 and turn my music on full blast to get motivated since there isn't that many people around. I see my boys again and they try to run a little bit with me and he captures a couple of pictures of me. At mile 30 I begin to see more people now and coming to the end. I usually have some energy to finish strong, but I had NOTHING left in me. I finished at 10 minute mile pace and felt like a crawl to the finish!
My Garmin results.
Results:
I definitely know that I have no desire to run another ultra marathon especially on concrete the whole way! It was a bucket list thing for me and huge check off that list. I burned 2,593 calories and was super hungry afterwards. I ended up eating two entrees for lunch!! I checked my results and shocked to see that I placed 1st in my division, 8 Gender, 38 Overall! Holy cow!! My finish time was 4:36:32 at 8:54/mi pace. I'm happy with that!
