Last Saturday was a great day. I was a little worried about my 15K race because I had been sick all week and was fighting a bad cold and cough. I even skipped out on my training Thursday and didn't run my 5 miles that day. My hubby said if I wanted to run the race Saturday, I'd better recover some during the week. Being the stubborn person that I am, I knew he was right and I did listen to him. Honestly, after taking all the meds, I just didn't have the energy to run Thursday. However, I did talk him into going with me to Hot Yoga that night on a voucher we bought online for 10 classes that we couldn't pass up. I really think going to that helped clear my nasal path cause I felt really good afterwards. However, in the middle of the night I had a cough attack. I rested Friday and was determined to run the race Saturday because my hubby registered for this race and it was his first time to run this with me. My co-worker and running buddy, Hilda also registered for this race and it was our first race to run together this year. She was also counting on me to pace her. I couldn't let either one of them down regardless of how I felt. Besides, last year when we ran this same race, Hilda got 2nd and I got 3rd place for our age group and we wanted to PR this year. Since I turned 40 this year, we are now in separate age groups and there was a good chance we could both place again.
I woke up feeling better and there was no turning back. I wasn't hungry but made myself eat half of a protein bar. Ready or not I was running. I was able to maintain good pace and only coughed a couple of times. I saw a lady who ran the Monster Dash 5K with me in Oct. She got first place and I got second. I wanted to catch up with her, but she was way ahead of me. I didn't push it given my condition. Hilda was able to keep up with me and it was nice running together again cause we push and motivate each other. I always try and count how many girls I pass up. That's just the competitor in me. I don't compete with anyone but myself. Each time I run, I just want to improve. In the last mile I saw a girl up ahead that I wanted to catch up and try and pass. I told Hilda, let's pass her and she said, "this is a good pace for me, go ahead." Next thing you know, I pass her and she speeds up and passes me. Then Hilda passes her and I pass her, but she tries to catch up again. It was on then, both Hilda and I pick it up and left her in our dust...lol. She gave us a good race in the end. I always try to find someone like that to get me to finish strong in the end. Well, surprisingly both Hilda and I placed first for our age group and we were able to PR from last year's race. I was shocked with results because I was sick all week, but I'll take 1st place any day!!
My hubby did good too and was pain free on his run which was good to hear. We kept running after race because we had to run 13 miles according to our training schedule. I love that he is training with me for our Cowtown Marathon in February. He is my number one supporter and happy to share this passion of mine with him. I ran the 4 miles at an easy, slow pace and felt pretty good.
