New Injury

On Monday, July 3rd I decided to do some hill work and run 6 miles.  Little did I know that would be a huge mistake running in my new Altra zero minimal shoes!!  I was doing fine until the last mile I felt a little tenderness on the outside of my left foot.  I figured it must of been the hills, but I didn't think I was going fast.  As soon as I stopped, I felt pain and started to worry.  I went home and it seemed to get more sore.  My friend invited me to go run with her for 4th of July and wanted to run a half marathon on our own.  I was excited for we haven't ran together in a while and felt it would be a great way to kick off 4th of July.  However, my foot was super tender to bounce in it in the morning and knew I had to listen to my body and tell her I wasn't going to make it after all.  The same thing happened to her when she bought these shoes, but she suffered from planters fasciitis.  She also told me she has done some reading on these type of shoes and they are not meant for long distance running.  I don't think it's a stress fracture, because I can walk fine.  I just can't run.  I thought I would try something new and hear how great it is to run barefoot.  I would never run barefoot, but thought this would be the closest I would get to that.  I knew that it would take time for my feet to get used to the zero drop from my Mizuno shoes I've been running in since I started marathon running.  The Altra shoes felt great, but just not for long distance running.  I haven't ran since July 3rd and it's driving me crazy!  We took our boys on a family vacation cruise and ate way too much and it really sucks because I can't run it off!  I did take a cycle class on the ship, but all the walking in sandals made my feet hurt more.  I ended up wearing my tennis shoes towards the end of the trip.

I went to buy me new Mizuno shoes and know that is what has always worked for me and will never run in anything else again for my marathon training!  I will keep my Altra for shorter distances, but that's it.  I have scheduled a doctor appointment with someone highly recommended to me by the running coach that works at the place where I got my shoes from.  I did teach cycle class tonight and felt a little soreness when doing hill work, so I back off and kept my resistance low.  I'll go tomorrow and see what doc says.
